A method for SARS-CoV-2 detection in wastewater, developed under the CoV-Water project, has gained world popularity after the prestigious Swiss journal Water published an extensive article about it. The method was developed by experts from Sofiyska Voda, operated by Veolia, in partnership with the Laboratory of Environmental Biotechnology, General and Applicable Hydrobiology Department, Faculty of Biology of Sofia University, though Clean&Circle Center of Competence. This method has ensured an early warning mechanism for the spread of coronavirus in different communities. The article entitled “Comparison of Two Methods for SARS-CoV-2 Detection in Wastewater: A Case Study from Sofia, Bulgaria” describes in detail the work of the project team and the results achieved.
Using four different methods for assessing RNA concentration, the team of Sofiyska Voda and the partners in the project have found that the main barrier to the successful identification of the virus is the presence of PCR inhibitors in wastewaters. The most effective way of addressing their presence has turned out to be the implementation of specific polymerase. The data from the study shows also that the use of such enzyme enhances the detection efficiency from 1.9% to 70.5% in control virus samples.
